How to Set up a SmartThings Hub v3 Illustrated Guide

Setting up a smart hub can be challenging if you are new to smart devices. This illustrated guide is aimed at beginners and anyone looking for step by step instructions on how to set up a SmartThings hub v3.

My tutorial will slowly walk you through every step of setting up the smart hub by using text and images. Be sure to follow each step carefully and you'll be on your way to getting your smart hub up and running.

The pictures in this tutorial will have red and yellow rectangles to show you what to click or read. The red rectangles will show you where to tap while the yellow ones will show you important text that you should be aware of.

  1. SmartThings Connect App Logo

    Step 1: Download the SmartThings Connect App

    Go to the app store that your phone uses and download the "SmartThings Connect" app.

  2. Step 2: Create a Samsung Account

    If you don't have a Samsung account follow my tutorial on how to create one.

    Step 3: Open the SmartThings Connect App

    Open the SmartThings Connect app on your phone or tablet.

  4. SmartThings Tap on the Menu Icon

    Tap on the icon that has three horizonal bars and an orange circle with the letter N on it.

  5. SmartThings Connect Tap Sign In

    Tap "Sign in".

  6. Login to Your Samsung Account

    Step 6: Login to Your Samsung Account

    Login with your Samsung account and tap "SIGN IN".

  7. SmartThings Agree to Samsung's Privacy Policies

    Step 7: Agree to Samsung's Privacy Policies

    If this is your first time signing in to this account with the app, you'll need to select the circles next to "Privacy Policy" and "I agree to all" before tapping "Start".

  8. SmartThings Delete Your Previously Installed SmartThings Hub

    If this is your first time setting up the hub move on to step 12. If you have already added the hub and want to set it up again, tap and hold the "SmartThings Hub" tile.

  9. SmartThings Tap the Edit Icon

    Tap "Edit" when the popup menu appears.

  10. SmartThings Tap the Delete Device Button

    Tap "Delete device".

  11. Agree to Removing Your SmartThings Hub and Any Devices Connected to It

    A popup will tell your that all of your devices connected to this hub will be removed with no way to restore them. If you agree to this tap "DELETE".

  12. Step 12: Factory Reset The SmartThings Hub

    In order to set up a SmartThings hub, the device has to be in pairing mode before we can connect to it. Follow my tutorial on how to factory reset the SmartThings hub v3 and enter pairing mode.

  13. Step 13: Wait for the Lights to Flash Red and Green

    After factory resetting the SmartThings hub, wait until the light on the front of the device starts flashing red and green to indicate pairing mode is on.

    Close the SmartThings Connect app and reopen it.

    When a popup asks you to add the SmartThings hub tap "ADD NOW" and move on to step 19. If you don't see this popup, follow the next three steps to add it manually.

    Tap "Add device".

  18. Search for the SmartThings Hub / IM6001-V3P

    In the searchbar type "smartthings hub" and tap on the result that says "SmartThings Hub / IM6001-V3P".

    Tap "Start".

    Tap on the dropdown button that has the default location name "My home".

  21. Add a New Location to SmartThings

    When the dropdown appears tap "+ Add new location".

    Enter a location name for your hub where it says "Name your location".

  23. Set up Your Geolocation in SmartThings

    Tap "Geolocation".

    If you have location disabled on your phone, a popup will ask you to enable it so tap "TURN ON".

    After a few seconds the gps location of your phone will show up. You can move the blue icon with your finger to change the location or click the target icon to reset it back to your phone's current location. When you are finished tap "Done".

    Choose the wallpaper you want for your background and tap "Done".

    Tap on the dropdown named "Add new room".

    Select the room name that you want to assign to your hub and tap "Next".

    You can change the room name by selecting the text field and editing the name. When you're finished tap "Save".

  34. Set up a Wifi Connection for the SmartThings Hub

    To set up a wifi connection for SmartThings select "Wi-Fi" and tap "Next". If you want to set up an ethernet connection for your hub go to step 46.

  35. SmartThings Verify the Power Cable Is Connected to the Hub

    Your power cable should already be connected so tap "Next".

  36. Verify the SmartThings Light Is Blinking Red and Green

    The lights on your smart hub should already be blinking red and green so tap "Next". If not, go back and complete step 12

  37. Allow SmartThings Access to Take Pictures and Record Video

    Tap "ALLOW" to enable your camera to scan the QR code found on the bottom of your SmartThings hub.

    Scan the QR code on the bottom of the hub.

    If the code doesn't scan tap "Add device manually".

    If you are adding the device manually, locate the serial number found on the bottom of the smart hub labeled "S/N".

    Enter the serial number into the text field and tap "Add hub".

  42. SmartThings Wait for the Hub to Verify

    A "Verifying..." message will appear and disappear within a few seconds. If you are stuck on "Verifying..." for more than 30 seconds, make sure you completed step 12, and the internet is working. The light on the hub should be flashing red and green before setting up the hub.

  43. SmartThings Internet Not Available

    You may see a message saying "Internet not available" this seems to happen because SmartThings is trying to change the wifi setting on your phone to set up the hub properly. Tap "DISMISS".

  44. Choose Your Wifi Network for SmartThings

    Select the wifi network that you want the SmartThings hub to use.

  45. Wait for the Hub to Configure Your Wifi Settings

    A message will appear for a few seconds saying "Configuring Wi-Fi...". If everything was a success, move on to step 56.

  46. Set up an Ethernet Connection for the SmartThings Hub

    To set up an ethernet connection for SmartThings select "Ethernet" and tap "Next". If you want to set up a wifi connection for your hub go to step 34.

  47. Verify That Your Ethernet and Power Cables Are Plugged In

    Verify that the power cable and ethernet cable are plugged into the SmartThings hub and your router.

    The light on your smart hub should already be blinking red and green so tap "Next". If not, go back and complete step 12

  50. Allow SmartThings Access to Take Pictures and Record Video

    Tap "ALLOW" to enable your camera to scan the QR code found on the bottom of your SmartThings hub.

    If the code doesn't scan tap "Add device manually".

    If you are adding the device manually, locate the serial number found on the bottom of the smart hub labeled "S/N".

  54. SmartThings Enter the Serial Number Into the Text Field

    Enter the serial number into the text field and tap "Add hub".

  55. Wait for the Hub to Verify

    A "Verifying..." message will appear and disappear within a few seconds. If you are stuck on "Verifying..." for more than 30 seconds, make sure you completed step 12, the ethernet cable is plugged in, and the internet is working. The light on the hub should be flashing red and green before setting up the hub.

  56. Wait for SmartThings to Connect

    A message will appear saying "Connecting..." and after some time it will switch to another screen.

  57. Wait for SmartThings to Register Your Hub

    Another message will appear saying "Registering your hub..." and will disappear after doing so.

  58. Wait for SmartThings to Download and Install Updates

    Now SmartThings will download and install any updates that it needs.

  59. SmartThings Has Successfully Connected

    If everything was successful you will see a message saying "Successfully connected". You can now rename your hub and tap "Done" when you are finished.

  60. SmartThings Is Now Connected and Ready to Be Used

    The SmartThings hub will be displayed on the screen with text saying "Connected" under it's name. You have successfully set up the SmartThings v3 hub and are ready to start adding devices.
