How to Discover Devices in the Alexa App

This tutorial will show you how to discover smart devices in the Alexa app. When your devices are connected, you will be able to monitor, interact and set up custom routines that will allow you to control them using your voice or through the Alexa app.

I'll also show you how to discover SmartThings devices in the Alexa app, so you can incorporate Alexa functionality into these devices or virtual switches. Follow these simple 13 steps to connect your smart devices to Alexa.

  1. Step 1: Install the SmartThings Alexa Skill

    You can move on to step 2 if you only want to discover new smart devices and add them to the Alexa app.

    If you want to connect SmartThings devices to the Alexa app, click on the video above to follow my tutorial on how to connect Alexa to SmartThings.

    If you have already installed the SmartThings Alexa app and want to import new devices from SmartThings into the Alexa app skip ahead to step 2.

  2. Open the Alexa App

    Open the Alexa app.

  3. Tap on the Devices Tab

    Tap on the devices tab at the bottom right-hand corner.

  4. Tap on the Plus Icon

    At the top right-hand corner click on the icon that has a plus sign on top of a circle.

  5. Tap Add Device

    Tap on "Add Device".

  6. Tap on the Other Button

    A new window will appear with a lot of different options to choose from. Scroll down to the bottom of the list until you find the "Other" button and tap on it.

  7. Tap Discover Devices

    Make sure the devices you want to add are in pairing mode or already set up in the SmartThings app. When you have done this tap on "Discover Devices".

  8. Alexa Is Discovering Devices: This May Take up to 45 Seconds

    Alexa will start trying to discover your new devices. This will take about 45 seconds before it is complete.

  9. Set up the Smart Devices

    If everything was successful, the Alexa app will show you any devices that it could find, so tap on the button labeled "SET UP DEVICE".

  10. Tap on Choose Group or Skip

    If you want to assign your device to a group, tap on "CHOOSE GROUP" otherwise tap on "SKIP" and go to step 12.

  11. Assign Your Smart Device to a Group

    Select the group you want to assign your smart device to and tap on the "ADD TO GROUP" button.

  12. Tap on the Continue Button

    Tap on the "CONTINUE" button.

  13. Tap Done and Your Device Is Set up and Ready to Use

    Tap on "DONE" and your device will be set up and ready to be used. If you have more than one device to set up, repeat the same process until you finish them all.
