Amazon has an Alexa skill called SmartThings, that authorizes Alexa to access the devices connected to your SmartThings account. This allows you to take the devices from your SmartThings hub and add them to the Alexa app.
This means you'll be able to create routines and automations for your smart devices, that can be activated with Alexa voice commands. You'll also be able to control them manually in the devices tab of the Alexa app.
This tutorial will show you step by step how to link these accounts so you can have Alexa control your SmartThings devices. The red rectangles on the images will show you where to tap and the yellow ones will show you important text to look for.
Download the Alexa app from the app store.
You'll need the Samsung account that's used to log in to your SmartThings account. If you don't have one, follow my tutorial on how to create a Samsung account.
You'll also need to have a location set up in SmartThings. Check out my tutorial on how to add one to SmartThings if you need one.
Open the Alexa app and tap on the icon with the three bars stacked on top of each over. It's located at the top left-hand corner of the screen.
When the menu appears, tap on "Skills & Games"
Touch the magnifying glass icon to reveal the search bar text field.
Search for "smartthings" in the text field and tap on the Alexa skill called "SmartThings".
Tap on "ENABLE TO USE"
We need to link our Samsung account to our Alexa account so tap on "SIGN IN WITH SAMSUNG ACCOUNT".
Enter in the email and password of the Samsung account that is linked to your SmartThings hub and tap "SIGN IN".
Select the drop down menu that says "Select one...".
A menu will appear showing you all of your locations and the number of devices associated with them. When you have decided on which location you want to use, tap on it.
Tap on "Authorize" to allow Amazon Alexa to access the smart devices associated with the location you selected.
Now that SmartThings has been successfully linked, click on the x at the top left hand corner.
To import your smart devices from the SmartThings hub tap on "DISCOVER DEVICES".
Alexa will begin discovering your smart devices and will take about 45 seconds before it is complete.
If you have any devices connected to your SmartThings location, you will see a message with the number of devices Alexa found. Tap on "CHOOSE DEVICE".
You'll see a list of connected devices that were found so select on one of them and tap "SET UP DEVICE".
If you want to assign the device to a group, select the group name and tap "ADD TO GROUP". If you don't want to assign it to a group tap on "SKIP".
If you added the device to a group, a message will appear telling you what group it was added to. Tap on "CONTINUE".
You'll see another message saying your device is set up and ready to use. Tap on "CONTINUE" and you'll be taken back to the list of devices from step 18. Repeat this process until you add the rest of your devices.
When you set up the last device in your list, you'll see a message saying "All your devices are set up". That's it, now all of your SmartThings devices can be controlled by Alexa via voice control, through automations, or manually.
