Alexa is the default name Amazon set up for it's echo devices, but did you know you can change to something else? By using a voice command or the Alexa app, you can change a setting to choose between 4 different preprogrammed names for Alexa, commonly known as the "wake word".
The 4 names that can be assigned to your Amazon Alexa echo devices are the following:
Unfortunately, at the time of writing this tutorial, there is no way to add a custom name / wake word to your Alexa devices.
In this tutorial, I will show you two different ways of changing the wake word of your Alexa devices. The first method will involve you using an Alexa voice command to change the wake word and the second method will show you how to change the wake word from the Alexa app.
This guide includes images for every step to show you exactly what to do. A red rectangle will show you where to click and a yellow rectangle will show you important text to be aware of. Now with that out of the way, let's get started.
The fastest way to change Alexa's wake word is with your voice. Follow these 2 simple steps to update Alexa's name in about 15 seconds.
Using your current wake word (Alexa by default) say "Alexa, change my wake word". Alexa will respond to this voice command by telling you that you can choose from Alexa, echo, computer and Amazon.
When prompted by Alexa, say the name of the wake word that you want to assign to your echo device. Alexa's light ring will begin to glow orange.
When the orange light around Alexa disappears, you'll be able to use your new name / wake word. This process will only take a few seconds to complete.
To update Alexa's wake word with the Alexa app, follow these 11 easy steps.
If you don't already have the Alexa app installed, download it from the app store.
Open the Alexa app.
In the Alexa app, click on the "Devices" tab found at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
Now tap on the button that says "Echo & Alexa".
Tap on the name of the Alexa echo device that you want to change. You will have to repeat the following steps for each device that you want to change.
Tap on the gear icon located at the top right-hand side of the screen. This will open the device settings menu for the echo device that you selected in step 5.
Scroll down towards the bottom of the device settings and when you see the "Wake Word" button, tap on it.
You will be presented with four different wake words to choose from. When you decide which name you want to assign to your Alexa device, tap on it.
A popup menu will appear telling you that updating may take a few minutes and you can continue using your current wake word while it's updating to the new one. When you are ready to change your wake word click the "OK" button.
Tap on the left arrow icon to go back to the device settings menu.
Scroll down until you locate the "Wake Word" button again. The new name that you selected for your echo device should be listed underneath the text that says "Wake Word".
When Alexa updates the wake word, it's light ring will turn orange. From my experience, once the orange ring disappears, your new Alexa name should be set up and ready to use. If Alexa doesn't respond to it's new name after a few seconds, wait a few minutes and try again.
